SBINZ Instructors Manual goes online

Last year I worked on a collaborative project re-writing and expanding the SBINZ Instructors Manual for Snowboard Instruction New Zealand (the snowboard division of the NZSIA).

My role here involved writing numerous sections, photography, image editing and diagram design, layout, and compiling and editing contributions from other Snowboard Examiners.

Initially the manual was only published in print form, however now the NZSIA have kindly made it available for all as a free download on the NZSIA website.

Whitelines Resort Guide

WSG Media recently teamed up with Whitelines snowboard magazine to produce the Whitelines Resort Guide. As one of the writers for WSG Media over the years, I was asked to write the review on Niseko, Japan.

It’s widely known that Niseko rates highly for it’s amazing powder, so it’s a relatively easy ski resort to write about to be honest. Pick up a copy of the magazine and the resort guide comes free with it.

Splitboarding Article for Outdoor Japan Magazine

Last March, at the tail-end of my season in Japan, I was fortunate enough to be invited on a splitboarding tour in the Niigata backcountry. Two days later I met with Gardner Robinson, the Editor for Outdoor Japan Magazine, to discuss Japanese distribution of our Snow-search Japan book.

Six months later and we finally have the go-ahead to do a second print run specifically for OJ to distribute in Japan. A partnership has been born.

This announcement comes just in time to see the publishing of my first article in Japanese media; Splitboarding in the Kagura Backcountry. Here’s the first two pages of the splitboarding article, but you’ll have to check out the mag to see the rest…

SSJ Press Release: Winning Gold in New York

Yesterday was the official awards ceremony for the Independent Publisher’s Awards in New York. We already knew we had been awarded gold in the Travel Guide category, but unfortunately we couldn’t make the actual ceremony. Shame, a weekend in NYC would have been a treat.

Anyway, here’s the official press release from the publishing company WSG-Media about the award…

IPPYs: Gold in the Travel Guidebook category!

ippy_goldmedal-scaled500The 2010 Independant Publisher Book Awards finals we’re announced two days ago. Unexpectedly, our recent Snow-search Japan publication won GOLD in the Travel Guidebook category. Wohoooooo!

I am hugely appreciative towards all our SSJ contributors and supporters. This is a book that has involved many different people over the three years it took to put together, so I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone that helped us along the way.

Watch out for the press release from WSG-Media in the next few days.

Snow-search Japan reviews

Two decent reviews of our recently published Snow-search Japan

Hokkaido Powder Guides blog

Good reviews; now we need the sales. Unexpectedly, book sales have fluctuated massively depending on the country. Unfortunately, the UK market hasn’t shown as much interest as we had hoped. On the slip slide however, Japan is proving to be a very productive market, with western visitors purchasing copies of the book whilst on their annual ski trip.

Snow-search Japan hits the shelves

It will be three years ago in February I visited Japan for the first time. I was writing for the World Snowboard Guide, updating their Japan section by writing reviews on the Hokkaido ski resorts.

A few months after this trip, Steve Dowle from WSG Media asked me if I was interested in heading up a new guide book focusing exclusively on the land of the rising sun. Who could say no to that I ask? And thus, the Snow-search Japan concept was born.

Almost three years later and the book is finally hitting the shelves and available for purchase online.
